The Under 18 Spirits 94 Blue went undefeated and won the Davis Winter College Showcase in front of dozens of college coaches on December 10th & 11th. Led offensively by Krista Ozimy and Sabrina Williamson, who each scored 3 goals, and defensively by Goalkeeper Sidney Coleman, the team scored 6 goals and conceded only 2 over the course of the 3-game Showcase.
Saturday’s game against FC Elk Grove was a hard-fought and bruising affair, with Krista Ozimy opening her scoring account with a goal off a header from a cross by Katie Cloninger, late in the game to secure a 1 to 1 tie and keep the team’s title hopes alive.
Next up was Ajax of Modesto, the #5 ranked team in Northern CA, and winners 6 nil in their game Saturday against Manteca. Once again, Krista Ozimy rose to the occasion and scored; but this time it was two goals! The first was a follow-up on a shot by Lauren Schaefer and the 2nd from a pass by Lia Sbisa. Sabrina Williamson drove the “nail in the coffin” with a 3rd goal off an assist by Amanda Swain. Final 3-0 San Juan!
The last game against the host team, Davis SC, saw San Juan take an early lead with a goal from Sabrina Williamson, off a cross from Madison Kernen. Davis soon countered and the game looked like it would remain tied. However Katie Cloninger’s corner found Sabrina Williamson when she made a near post run, beat the Davis GK to the ball and deftly and with a sublime touch, scored on a flick header to seal the deal for San Juan.
Spirits Coach Curtis Holmes was pleased with the results, but more impressed with the consistent high standard of play during the Showcase by the team. He attributes the addition of guest players Sabrina Williamson and Ashley Speer of the 94 ECNL team and Taylor Landuk of the 95 ECNL team with improving the team’s overall performance throughout the weekend.
