Congratulations on a successful weekend of soccer as the boys bring home the Championship Cup! San Juan Spirits of ’95 ECNL

We are the Champions…National Champions!
In the inaugural year of the Elite Club National League, the San Juan Spirits of ’95 ECNL captured the National Championship last weekend in Redmond, Washington. The ‘95s advanced to the semi-finals after earning third place in their division after a year long competition in Texas, Florida and Nevada. The Spirits started strong in the championship playoffs by shutting out second seeded Solar, a team from Dallas, Texas, 2-0. Kira Wagoner scored first on a beautiful arching shot from outside the box. The game was fast and physical, and the Spirits defense turned back all attempts by Solar. In the last minutes of the game, Taylor Landuk deftly headed a ball to Marisa Grattan who broke away, outstepped the keeper and notched the second goal for San Juan. The second game against Connecticut Soccerplus also ended in a 2-0 shutout for San Juan. Kira Wagoner scored on an assist from Bianca Reveles and Casi Lynch headed in the second goal after a corner kick for the Spirits.
Then came the championship final against #1 ranked Lonestar SC from Austin, Texas. San Juan pulled ahead first with a goal by Bianca Reveles off a precision pass by Brenna Mockler. Lonestar tied it up and immediately the Spirits responded with a second goal headed in by Tatyana Garrett from a cross by Kira Wagoner. As the final minute of the game approached, the sidelines were about to start celebrating when the Texas team found the back of the net on a rebound off a corner kick. The whistle blew, sending the game into double overtime and eventually penalty kicks. On the eighth round, the Spirits’ keeper, Morgan Jernigan stepped up, with a second great block of a penalty kick, clinching the champtionship for the Spirits. The ‘95s also won promotion to the “A” division of the ECNL for the 2010-11 season.

Spirits '96 Blue
US Club Regional Champions

The Spirits '96 Blue were a last minute fill in for a team that dropped out of the US Club Regionals in Turlock taking place June 19 - 22. The Spirits '96 played up an age group ('95s) in the Premier Group with the help of a few '96 ECNL players and Spirits '96 White Coach John Love. The teams first game was against CASA Boca with a 2-1 win for San Juan on Day 1. Day 2's game had the Spirits down 1- 0 in the first half on an unlucky goal. The Spirits continued to outplay Cap FC and found the equalizer through a PK with seconds left on the clock, game ended 1-1. Day 3, the Spirits met up with Marin FC and the game was sitting at 0-0 with minutes left. Spirits added numbers forward and found a nice floater above the Marin FC keeper ending the game Spirits 1-0. Winning the 3rd game meant the Spirits were in the Championship on Day 4 against the Cal Cougars who won convincingly in their preliminary games with 3 wins, 14 goals for and 0 against. Both teams fought hard for the Championship. The Spirits were able to put a goal in the 2nd half and continued to press to the last minute. The Spirits beat a very good side, California Cougars, 1-0 for the US Club Regional Championship. By winning the Regional Championship the team did qualify for the US Club Nationals in Virginia Beach. Congratulations!

Lightning ’99 Blue
Wins U12 Cal Cup Championship Title
June 27, 2010 San Juan Lightning ’99 won their bracket with wins against Cal Rush Nike ’99 (6-0), Santa Rosa United Juventus (5-0), and Davis Legacy Barcelona (2-1) to earn their spot in the semi-finals. The semi-final game between Lightning ’99 and the wildcard team, Davis Legacy ’99 AC Milan, served as a challenge. After a hard fought goal in the first half to give Lightning '99 the advantage, the second half saw their undoing as a determined and tenacious Davis team came back to tie the match. The game could not be decided in regulation and headed to penalty kicks for the decision. Lightning ’99 pulled out a win, 4-3 by PK’s to secure their chance to play in the championship match. In the final game against Diablo FC 98, Lightning ’99 arrived with confidence. They immediately took the field with energy on Defense and a persistent Offense. Blue took an early lead and increased the lead with another goal in the second half. Although Diablo was able to convert on a penalty kick, the Lightning defense held on strong to secure the victory and emerge as the U12 Boys Cal Cup Champions. Congratulations Lightning ’99 and Coach Rino Chimienti on your second tournament win -- the Cal Cup victory!

Spirits '00 Blue
A Memorable Weekend at the Stanford Memorial Shootout!

The Spirits-00 Blue had a great showing at the Stanford tournament, held in Palo Alto on May 29th -30th. In the first game against Nevada Elite-00 Blue, the Spirits came out strong, beating their opponents 4-1, with their great passing and finishing. Game 2 vs Central Valley Crossfire brought the team a 1-0 victory. That night there was a team dinner to celebrate the day's good fortune and pump the girls up for the following day's competition.
On Sunday morning, the girls won their bracket by outplaying the Juventus Blast, beating them 2-0. That set the team up for the championship game against the host team, Palo Alto Thunder. Although they had their chances to win that game and played hard until the final whistle, the cards weren't in their favor,
and the girls lost 0-2.
The tournament was well run, fields were in great condition, the weather was perfect (ok, maybe it did get a little toasty in the afternoons :) but it was just an overall positive experience for the team. Great job to Abby, Abigail, Allison, Breanna, Courtney, Emma J, Emma T, Hailey, Katie, Kiana and Megan, and snaps to Coach River for leading the team to a great finish for their first tournament of the season!
Go Spirits!!!

Lightning ’99 Blue
Wins Nomads Northern Showcase

The ’99 boys displayed teamwork, skill, and determination at the first annual Nomads Northern Showcase in Fresno, where they captured the 1st place title. Lightning ‘99 faced three worthy teams in Nomads San Diego, Nomads Fresno, and the Roosevelt Revolution. After the first two Saturday games, a win against Nomads Fresno (3-1) and a disappointing loss against the Roosevelt Revolution (2-3), Blue was tied for second place at the tournament tables. In order to continue to the Championship game, Lightning ’99 would have to beat the capable Nomads San Diego team, who had won both their games. Blue was up against Nomad SD’s strong defense (both SD games were shut outs) and a proficient attack machine (SD scored eight goals the day before). Lightning ’99 showed up the next day ready for the challenge. With their own defensive strength, they were able to keep SD’s attack to a minimum. The ’99 boys earned their spot in the Championship with a 3-1 win. They faced Nomads San Diego again in the Championship game. Blue Defense maintained their stranglehold, choking SD attacks and keeping the ball forward. San Juan demonstrated unmatched teamwork and patience as they aptly passed the ball and used the entire field to set up efficient plays and numerous shots on goal. It was a definitive victory, 5-1, and the Lightning ’99 boys won the tournament title. Thank you Coach Anthony Chimienti for all your help with the team. Congratulations Coach Rino Chimienti and Lightning ’99 on your first tournament win of the 2010 season!

Spirits 99 Blue
Wins Stanford Memorial Day Shootout

Congratulations to the San Juan Spirits 99 Blue for a great start to their 2010 tournament season. The team rallied back from an initial loss to a win, at the tournament championship. They started the tournament on Saturday with a 1-2 loss to Sac United SC Extreme 97. But those would be the last 2 goals the Spirits would give up all weekend. They defeated their next two opponents with scores of 5-0 (vs. Nevada Elite White) and 3-0 (vs. Nevada Elite Blue) and earned a spot in the Championship match where they’d have an opportunity for a rematch against Sac United. This time the result was quite different. The Spirits were able to carry their momentum into this final match and came in strong with a couple of early goals. The Spirits continued to play hard throughout the game and built on the early lead. The Championship game ended with a 6-0 victory over Sac United SC Extreme 97 and a great overall weekend for the team. Congratulations to the Spirits of 99 Blue, Coach Curtis Holmes and Coach Paul Arellanes who helped us through the final game.

Undefeated at Manteca Spring Invitational

The San Juan Lightning ’00 Blue have picked up where they left off last season by capturing the championship at the Manteca Spring Invitational. The lightning began the tournament with a decisive 5-0 win over Modesto Ajax. They finished the day off in similar fashion by beating the Livingston Fuego 9-3. With a 7-3 win over the host Manteca Boca Jrs., the Lightning advanced to play America USA ’99 for the championship, a rematch of the 2009 NorCal State Cup Finals. The championship game was well played by both teams with the Lightning holding a 2-1 advantage at the half. The Lightning held nothing back in the second half and put the game out of reach of America USA with a late goal to make it 3-1 and take home the championship. Congratulations to the San Juan Lightning ’00 Blue and to coaches Anthony and Rino Chimienti on a well earned win.

SAN JUAN EXCELS IN ECNL LAS VEGAS SHOWCASE!
San Juan Spirits of ‘94 and ’95 girls teams achieved tremendous successes, in the ECNL league, at the Las Vegas Showcase last weekend. With over 100 top college coaches watching their games, including Stanford, UCLA, Notre Dame, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara, Portland, Princeton and Rutgers among many others, the San Juan girls showed their skills, athleticism and heart throughout their final ECNL league games of the season.
The U15 team, Spirits of ’95 Blue, shut out both SoCal’s West Coast FC 2-0 and Connecticut’s SoccerPlus 3-0, losing in a close match only to #1 ranked Solar 1-0 on a corner kick, to finish in the top four of their division. As a result, the ‘95s will be promoted to the “A” division for next season’s ECNL league, and will also qualify for the ECNL national championship playoffs in Seattle this July. The U.S. National Team scout watching their games commented: “It’s clear these girls came to play good soccer!”
The Spirits of ’94 Blue won a hard fought game, under very windy, conditions against the previously undefeated #1 ranked Solar team from Dallas, Texas, 1-0. The 2008 national champion San Juan ‘94s, playing in the “A” division of the ECNL, also defeated Arizona State Champions Sereno SC 4-0, before conceding a 1-1 tie to Colorado Rush in their final game of the ECNL league.
